چکیده

Abstract Intense magnetic storms pose a systemic threat to the electric power grid. In this study we examined solar/interplanetary causes of such storms, their peak theoretical and observed intensities, occurrence frequency. Using coronal mass ejection (CME) solar wind data, selected 18 intense from 1996 2021 with disturbance storm time (Dst) index less than – 200 nT analyzed events conditions associated them. Approximately 83% CMEs were full halo type more flares located within 30 degrees in longitude central meridian. The integrated dawn-to-dusk field (E y ) showed good correlation |min. We obtained 236 mV/m for 2500 expected upper limit Earth’s magnetosphere using empirical equations between parameters that value is possible according past observations. 54 13 March 1989 165/79 Carrington (|min. Geomagnetic storms driven by ICME- and CIR-dominated solar wind

[1] The interaction of the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere is complex and the phenomenology of the interaction is very different for solar wind dominated by interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) compared to solar wind dominated by corotating interaction regions (CIRs). We perform a superposed epoch study of the effects of ICMEand CIR-dominated solar wind upon the storm-time pla...

Solar wind-magnetosphere coupling efficiency during ejecta and sheath-driven geomagnetic storms

We have investigated the effect of key solar wind driving parameters on solar wind-magnetosphere coupling efficiency during sheath and magnetic cloud-driven storms. The particular focus of the study was on the coupling efficiency dependence with Alfvén Mach number (MA). The efficiency has been estimated using the dawn-dusk component of the interplanetary electric field (EY ), Newell and Borovsk...

Terrestrial Response To Eruptive Solar Flares: Geomagnetic Storms

During the interval of August 1978December 1979, 56 unambiguous fast forward shocks were identified using magnetic field and plasma data collected by the ISEE-3 spacecraft. Because this intervaI is at a solar maximum we assume the streams causing these shocks are associated with coronal mass ejections and eruptive solar flares. For these shocks we shall describe the shockstorm relationship for ...

Flickering Events in Wind and Solar Power

This paper reports stochastic properties of renewable wind and solar energy resources by studying their conditional probability distribution functions (cpdf) in different time lags. The empirical results are obtained for data of global horizontal irradiance measured by a single sensor and the power output of a single wind turbine, as well as for an averaged solar sensor field and an aggregated ...
